Through our extensive professional experience in freight trucking and understanding the role of warehousing, we understand that having reliable logistics operations is critical to preventing supply chain disruptions across North America.

For those new to the industry, or prospective clients interested in our services, here we’ll explain the basics of freight warehousing and logistics, along with highlighting our warehousing facilities based in Tacoma and Kent, Washington, USA.

Warehousing and Logistics Explained

Warehousing and logistics involve the management and movement of goods from production to the final customer. At the core of any supply chain, warehousing provides a physical space to store products, while logistics coordinates the transportation of those products to their next destination.

Together, these functions ensure that businesses can operate smoothly, managing inventory levels, streamlining warehouse operations, and reducing transit times.

Companies providing warehouse logistics services may offer facilities equipped with warehouse management systems that give real-time visibility over stock, enabling accurate inventory control and faster response to changing customer demands, or special re-packaging machines to get products further secure before distribution.

What is a Freight Warehouse?

A freight warehouse is a facility specifically designed to store goods temporarily as they await transportation to their final destination. Unlike traditional warehousing, which may focus on long-term storage, freight warehouses emphasize transport-related warehousing, which is the efficient movement of goods.

Key services in freight warehousing include:

Cross-docking

Cross-docking works by directly transferring products from incoming trucks or containers to outgoing vehicles with little or no storage time.

Transloading

Transloading service is when freight is unloaded from one mode of transport (e.g., ship or rail) and reloaded onto another (e.g., truck) for the next leg of its journey.

Freight consolidation

Freight consolidation is when smaller shipments are combined into one larger shipment to optimize transportation and reduce costs.

Types of Freight: Land, Air, and Sea

Freight can move via three primary modes of transport:

Land Freight

Trucks and trains transport goods over land. At Stryder USA, we handle full truckload (FTL) and less-than-truckload (LTL) freight, with strategic access to highways and rail systems across Washington.

Air Freight

Used for high-value or time-sensitive goods, air freight ensures the fastest delivery. While more expensive, it can be an important component of a logistics strategy focused on speed to market.

Ocean Freight

Ideal for large, bulky shipments or international transport, ocean freight services are the most economical for long-distance shipping.
